Ladies and gentlemen,
Today I want to talk about some tips to help deal with nervousness. Notice that I didn't say "overcome nervousness". That is because I believe that there is nothing that will make you instantly calm while speaking in public except of course, for horse tranquilizers『镇定剂』. The secret to achieving true calm, without drugs, is in practice. So I'd like to share some tips that will make you appear calm while you are working at expanding your comfort zone.

今天我想想谈谈处理演讲紧张的几个技巧。不知道你有没有注意到我并没有说“消除恐惧”，那只是因为我认为在公众演讲中你不可能保持绝对的平静，当然，除非你服用精神镇定剂。真正要取得心理镇定的秘诀是练习而不是通过镇定剂。如果你一直在努力使自己演讲更加轻松的话，我想同你分享一下能够让你保持平静的几个秘诀。
First of all, the very best way to deal with nervousness is too practice. Practice your speech so much that you can do it while on autopilot. That way, your lips and body will know what to do even if your mind has checked-out.
首先，充足的练习是应付紧张的最好方法。经常练习演讲能够让你熟能生巧，发挥自如。 这样，即使你的大脑一片空白，你的嘴唇和身体的动作也会不由自主地协调起来。
While speaking, concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply. Not only will you not hyperventilate『过度呼吸』 this way but you will also keep a nice steady supply of oxygen flowing through your blood stream. Nervous people have a tendency to take short shallows breaths.
说话的时候，保持呼吸缓慢而深沉，这样你不但不会呼吸过度而变得闷抑，你还可以通过血液得到平稳的氧气供给。精神紧张的人往往趋向于呼吸急促且短浅。
Hum a key before you begin to speak and lower your voice just a tiny bit. The resultant『结果的』 noise will sound less like the pitch of a nervous mouse and more like a normal speaking voice. Avoid nervous hand gestures, too. Don't pretend that you are Adam and give yourself a fig leaf『仅可蔽体之衣服』. Don't wring your hands like a substitute teacher『代课老师』 in the wildest home room『年级教室』. If you haven't got a good use for them at the time, keep those hands hanging freely at your side.
说话前为自己定一个调，声音放低一点。这样你的声音就不会听起来过于紧张而更像一种自然说话声音。还要避免紧张的手势动作，不要装腔作势，犹如穿着新装的皇帝。不要像在年级教室里的代课老师一样使劲挥动双手。如果你不是很擅长使用手势的话，就让你的手在一旁自然地放着。
And try to put the whole thing into perspective. What's there to be afraid of anyway? Does the state of world peace hang on the result of this one presentation? Are small children going to die as a result? Will it even be something that you remember in five years time? Why are we afraid of public speaking anyway? There is no good reason. We got something to say, why can't we say it? Some fears we have for a good reason. For instance, I'm not planning to take up sky diving any time soon. I'm not quite ready to die yet. But fear of public speaking? It is completely irrational. Think of the fear in that way and try to see it for what it really is. Stupid.

And if all else fails, quote a little Shakespeare. I have a favorite line that gave me strength and I used to repeat it like a mantra. Unfortunately the context from which it comes is a teensy bit grim. It happens to be the tool that Lady MacBeth used to talk the hubby『丈夫』 into rubbing out『铲除』 the king. But it is a great line, nonetheless. And it is the line that I'd like to end this educational minute with. It goes like this: Screw your courage to the sticking place and we shall not fail.

Since 1901, the prize has been awarded to those who have made major contributions in the struggle for world peace. This year the United Nations and its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan were awarded Nobel Peace Prize for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.

I believe as we listened to the [Nobel] Citation『表彰;传令嘉奖』 we also realized the challenge, the challenge thrown to us by the Nobel Committee. I am sure we will rise up to the challenge.
When I was reappointed Secretary-General, one of our colleagues, Ibrahima Fall, was traveling through Africa, and he met an old man, an old man he didn't know. The old man said to him, I have a message for the Secretary-General - tell him we are happy that he is reappointed but he must take time to celebrate his achievements and successes to be able to focus on challenges ahead. In effect, it is the same message we are getting from the Nobel Committee, that there are challenges ahead. We have had some successes and failures, and they expect us to work hard and meet those challenges. This is an indispensable organization, but an organization that can only work because of the staff and their contribution and your dedication.
Our staff are often on the frontlines『前线』. In the past week alone we have lost about ten colleagues, in Georgia and in Afghanistan. And yet our staff keep at it. You are prepared to go to any corner of the world in the service of peace and the work of the United Nations.
Today that work has been recognized『表彰；公认』. We have won the Nobel Prize, and I think it is a shot in the arm that is really deserved and needed. I hope it will urge us forward and encourage all of us to tackle『处理；应付』 our tasks with even greater determination『决心；毅力』. I know as we press forward, we can count on the cooperation, the support and encouragement of our Member States『成员国』, because the UN is them, and the UN is us. I am sure that together, we will meet the challenges ahead.
I said this morning to the press that the world is a messy『混乱，麻烦的』 place, and unfortunately the messier it gets, the more work we have to do. And so to wake up to a morning like this, a morning of recognition, a morning of encouragement for all of us, is something that we should cherish. But we should cherish this in a sense of『在某种意义上』deciding to even try harder.
So, my good friends, let me say congratulations to all of you. Let me say that if the UN has achieved anything it is because of the work that you do, and your dedication, and we look forward to many more years of that kind of service. And who knows, if you keep at it, maybe some of you will see another Nobel Peace Prize.

The theme of this Forum, “Next Generation Asia” is of great significance, for the development of Asia bears on the development and prosperity of all countries and regions not only in this continent but also worldwide.
In the course of the 2Oth century, we Asian people waged an unyielding『不屈服』 struggle to win national independence and liberation, get rid of poverty『贫穷』and backwardness『落后』, and bring about development and prosperity, and scored remarkable achievements. All this has contributed significantly to peace and development in Asia and the world at large『整个』. The tremendous change and rise of Asia are a great miracle『奇迹』 that the Asian people have created and an important landmark『里程碑』in the world development and progress of the 2Oth century.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,
You are gathered here this evening by the beautiful Huangpu River for APEC CEO Summit 2001. On behalf of the Chinese Government and people as well as in my own name, I would like first to extend a warm welcome to you all.
I have attended many sessions of the APEC CEO Summit to discuss the Asia-Pacific economic cooperation and development with business leaders in the region. This time, APEC CEO Summit 2001 Shanghai is devoted to New Century, New Economy: Developing in a Globalizing World, which is of great significance. At the last APEC CEO Summit in Brunei, I made some observations『言论；意见』 on the New Economy and economic globalization. Today I wish to further elaborate on this subject.
Mankind has entered a new century. This is not merely a chronological『时间前后的』 change. It marks a new era of economic development and social advancement for the international community. This new era distinguishes itself from others by a growing trend towards a multi-polar『多极的』world and economic globalization, and, particularly, by the rapid progress in science and technology.
All these have laid unprecedented『空前的』 material and technological conditions for continued economic and social progress worldwide and promise a broad prospect. The scientific and technological progress is bringing a profound impact on economic, political and cultural life of all human societies. To develop the New Economy, we must not only update our economy with advanced science and technology, but also, in response to this new trend of development, revamp『改造』 the economic structures, systems and mechanisms accordingly, readjust the economic relationships between states and between enterprises, and update『更新』our philosophies『思想』and concepts『观念』for economic and technological cooperation across national boundaries.
The past one hundred years and more have witnessed considerable expansion of global productive forces, unprecedented achievements in the production of both material and spiritual wealth and significant improvement in the living conditions of mankind. It must be noted, however, that in spite of rapid advancement of productive forces and science and technology worldwide, development has all along remained uneven『不平衡』 and, what is more, the North-South gap has kept widening instead of narrowing. Poverty and hunger have been a commonplace『常见的东西』 in developing countries. People are still plagued『折磨』by regional conflicts, environmental degradation『降低』and transnational『跨国的』 crimes, among others. The development of high-tech industries is faced with some problems, such as relatively insufficient effective demand. All this shows that in order to ensure that all peoples in the world benefit from the progress of the productive forces and, particularly, of science and technology, and achieve common development, it is imperative『必要的;紧急的』to reform and renovate『更新』the economic systems, structures and mechanisms while developing new technologies and new industries.
In this connection, the key lies in a full implementation of the spirit of development through multilateral『多边的』cooperation in world economic affairs. All countries or regions, regardless of ethnicity, history, culture, social system and level of economic development, should respect each other, seek common ground while setting aside differences, learn from each other to offset their own weakness, coexist peacefully, work for the establishment of a new, fair and rational international political and economic order and strive for common growth and prosperity through consultations and cooperation. Here in lies not only the fundamental solution to the problems in the world economic development, but also an essential condition for development of the New Economy in the new century.

China is the most populous developing country in the world. China cannot develop itself in isolation of the world, and the world also needs China for its development. We sincerely hope to see increased cooperation with all other APEC members and all the countries and regions in the world for common development. After over two decades of reform and opening up, the Chinese economy and China's overall『综合的；整体上的』 national strength have grown substantially 『本质的；大大的』with an ever-expanding market. In recent years in particular, China has redoubled its efforts to expand domestic『国内的』demand and imports, and it has managed to maintain the momentum of a sustained, rapid and sound economic development. China has entered a new stage of development in which it is building a well-to-do 『安康的』society across the country and speeding up the socialist modernization drive. China has drawn up a blueprint『蓝图』for development in the next five years. It will unswervingly『坚定不移地』 focus on development and carry out restructuring all the way through with reform, opening up and advances in science and technology as the driving force and the improvement of the living standard of people as the fundamental objective. It will continue to promote economic growth and social progress. We have full confidence in the prospects for China's development in the new century.
After more than ten years of hard work, the negotiations on China's accession to the WTO have been concluded. China's accession will herald『预示…来临』a new stage for China's opening up. China will participate in international economic cooperation and division of labor『分工』on a larger scale and in greater depth. With a view to『为了；以…为目的』 effectively fulfilling its WTO obligations 『义务』and commitments, China is reviewing and amending, where necessary, existing laws and regulations as required by the WTO rules. Provisions of Chinese laws inconsistent『不一致』 with the WTO rules or our commitments will be amended to achieve consistency. All those that may contravene 『违反』 the WTO rules or our commitments will be abrogated『废除』. In case of absence of laws or regulations for the WTO purpose, new legislation will be enacted. We will continue to work hard to develop with all other countries and regions in the world an economic relationship that features cooperation, mutual benefit, all-win and common prosperity.

Closer cooperation between enterprises is a major trend in the enterprise development today. Many entrepreneurs believe that although competition among enterprises is important, cooperation is even more so and that there is a bigger scope for cooperation than for competition. This is a sensible and well-grounded view. Given the development of economic globalization and the New Economy, enterprises can hardly succeed without good cooperative relations with other enterprises.
China will develop its economy further and open itself still wider to the outside world, which offers more business opportunities to overseas enterprises. Since China's reform and opening up, Chinese enterprises have vigorously『有活力的』undertaken Ecotech（Economy and Technology Exchange）with overseas enterprises and scored tremendous achievements. While helping Chinese enterprises develop, overseas enterprises have also benefited from it, hence mutual benefit and all-win. At this APEC CEO Summit, you will discuss the important matter of world economic development and you will also discuss how to strengthen mutual cooperation. The Chinese Government stands ready to continue to offer facilities and necessary conditions for closer cooperation between Chinese enterprises and their overseas counterparts.

Today we've had a national tragedy『悲剧』. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist『恐怖分子』 attack on our country. I have spoken to the Vice President, to the Governor of New York, to the Director of the FBI, and have ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families, and to conduct a full-scale『全尺寸；全规模』investigation『调查』to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act.
Terrorism against our nation will not stand.
And now if you would join me in a moment of silence. May God bless the victims, their families, and America. Thank you very much.

Thank you all!
Chief Justice Rehnquist, President Carter, President Bush, President Clinton, distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, the peaceful transfer 『转移』of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath『宣誓』, we affirm『断言；申明』old traditions and make new beginnings.
As I begin, I thank President Clinton for his service to our nation. And I thank Vice President Gore for a contest conducted with spirit and ended with grace『体面』.
I am honored and humbled to stand here, where so many of America's leaders have come before me, and so many will follow.
We have a place, all of us, in a long story, a story we continue, but whose end we will not see. It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator『解放者』of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant『仆人』 of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess, to defend but not to conquer. It is the American story,a story of flawed『有缺点的』 and fallible『不可靠的』 people, united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals.
The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding American promise that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance that no insignificant person was ever born. Americans are called to enact this promise in our lives and in our laws. And though our nation has sometimes halted『缓停』, and sometimes delayed, we must follow no other course.
Through much of the last century, America's faith in freedom and democracy was a rock in a raging『狂暴的』 sea. Now it is a seed upon the wind, taking root in many nations. Our democratic faith is more than the creed『信条；信念』of our country, it is the inborn『天生的』hope of our humanity, an ideal we carry but do not own, a trust we bear and pass along『向前行』. And even after nearly 225 years, we have a long way yet to travel.
While many of our citizens prosper, others doubt the promise, even the justice, of our own country. The ambitions『野心；抱负』of some Americans are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice『偏见』and the circumstances『情况』of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep, it seems we share a continent, but not a country.
We do not accept this, and we will not allow it. Our unity, our union, is the serious work of leaders and citizens in every generation. And this is my solemn『严肃，庄重的』 pledge: I will work to build a single nation of justice and opportunity.
I know this is in our reach because we are guided by a power larger than ourselves who creates us equal in His image. And we are confident in principles that unite and lead us onward. America has never been united by blood or birth or soil. We are bound『捆绑；团结』 by ideals that move us beyond our backgrounds, lift us above our interests and teach us what it means to be citizens.
Every child must be taught these principles. Every citizen must uphold them. And every immigrant『移民』, by embracing these ideals, makes our country more, not less, American.
Today, we affirm a new commitment to live out our nation's promise through civility『礼貌』, courage, compassion『爱心』and character. America, at its best, matches a commitment to principle with a concern for civility. A civil society demands from each of us good will and respect, fair dealing『公平』and forgiveness『宽恕』.
Some seem to believe that our politics can afford to be petty because, in a time of peace, the stakes『利害关系』 of our debates appear small. But the stakes for America are never small. If our country does not lead the cause of freedom, it will not be led. If we do not turn the hearts of children toward knowledge and character, we will lose their gifts and undermine『埋没』 their idealism. If we permit our economy to drift『缓慢移动』and decline『衰退』, the vulnerable『脆弱的』will suffer most.
We must live up to the calling we share. Civility is not a tactic『策略』or a sentiment『情绪』. It is the determined choice of trust over cynicism『讥笑』, of community over chaos『混乱』. And this commitment, if we keep it, is a way to shared accomplishment.
America, at its best, is also courageous.
Our national courage has been clear in times of depression and war, when defending common dangers defined our common good. Now we must choose if the example of our fathers and mothers will inspire us or condemn us. We must show courage in a time of blessing by confronting『面对』 problems instead of passing them on to future generations.
Together, we will reclaim America's schools, before ignorance『愚昧』and apathy『冷漠』claim more young lives. We will reform Social Security and Medicare; sparing our children from struggles we have the power to prevent. And we will reduce taxes, to recover the momentum『动力』of our economy and reward the effort and enterprise of working Americans. We will build our defenses beyond challenge, lest weakness invite challenge. We will confront weapons of mass destruction『大规模毁灭』, so that a new century is spared new horrors.
The enemies of liberty and our country should make no mistake: America remains engaged in the world by history and by choice, shaping a balance of power that favors freedom. We will defend our allies and our interests. We will show purpose without arrogance『自大』 . We will meet aggression 『侵犯』and bad faith with resolve 『决心』and strength. And to all nations, we will speak for the values that gave our nation birth.
America, at its best, is compassionate.
In the quiet of American conscience, we know that deep, persistent poverty is unworthy of our nation's promise. And whatever our views of its cause, we can agree that children at risk are not at fault. Abandonment『放弃』 and abuse『亵渎』 are not acts of God, they are failures of love. And the proliferation『激增』 of prisons, however necessary, is no substitute for hope and order in our souls.
Where there is suffering, there is duty. Americans in need are not strangers; they are citizens, not problems, but priorities. And all of us are diminished『减少』when any are hopeless.
Government has great responsibilities for public safety and public health, for civil rights and common schools. Yet compassion is the work of a nation, not just a government.
And some needs and hurts are so deep they will only respond to a mentor's touch or a pastor's prayer. Church and charity, synagogue『犹太教堂』and mosque『清真寺』 lend our communities their humanity, and they will have an honored place in our plans and in our laws.
Many in our country do not know the pain of poverty, but we can listen to those who do. And I can pledge our nation to a goal: When we see that wounded traveler on the road to Jericho, we will not pass to the other side.
America, at its best, is a place where personal responsibility is valued and expected.
Encouraging responsibility is not a search for scapegoats『替罪』, it is a call to conscience. And though it requires sacrifice『牺牲』, it brings a deeper fulfillment. We find the fullness of life not only in options, but in commitments. And we find that children and community are the commitments that set us free.
Our public interest depends on private character, on civic duty and family bonds and basic fairness, on uncounted, on unhonored acts of decency『端庄;体面』which give direction to our freedom.
Sometimes in life we are called to do great things. But as a saint『圣徒』 of our times has said, every day we are called to do small things with great love. The most important tasks of a democracy are done by everyone.
I will live and lead by these principles: to advance my convictions with civility, to pursue the public interest with courage, to speak for greater justice and compassion, to call for responsibility and try to live it as well. In all these ways, I will bring the values of our history to the care of our times.
What you do is as important as anything government does. I ask you to seek a common good beyond your comfort; to defend needed reforms against easy attacks; to serve your nation, beginning with your neighbor. I ask you to be citizens: citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens, building communities of service and a nation of character.
Americans are generous and strong and decent『体面，正派的』, not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.
After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: "We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?"
Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.
We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.
Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.
This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.

My fellow citizens, tonight is my last opportunity to speak to you from the Oval Office as your president.
I am profoundly grateful to you for twice giving me the honor to serve, to work for you and with you to prepare our nation for the 21st century. And I'm grateful to Vice President Gore, to my Cabinet secretaries, and to all those who have served with me for the last eight years.
This has been a time of dramatic『巨大的』 transformation, and you have risen to every new challenge. You have made our social fabric 『结构;组织』 stronger, our families healthier and safer, our people more prosperous.
You, the American people, have made our passage into the global information age an era of great American renewal『复兴；复活』.
In all the work I have done as president, every decision I have made, every executive action I have taken, every bill I have proposed and signed, I've tried to give all Americans the tools and conditions to build the future of our dreams, in a good society, with a strong economy, a cleaner environment, and a freer, safer, more prosperous world.
I have steered my course by our enduring values. Opportunity for all. Responsibility from all. A community of all Americans. I have sought to give America a new kind of government, smaller, more modern, more effective, full of ideas and policies appropriate to this new time, always putting people first, always focusing on the future.
Working together, America has done well. Our economy is breaking records, with more than 22 million new jobs, the lowest unemployment『失业』in 30 years, the highest home ownership『房屋所有权』ever, the longest expansion in history.
Our families and communities are stronger. Thirty-five million Americans have used the family leave law. Eight million have moved off welfare. Crime is at a 25-year low. Over 10 million Americans receive more college aid, and more people than ever are going to college. Our schools are better higher standards, greater accountability『责任；义务』and larger investments have brought higher test scores, and higher graduation rates.
More than three million children have health insurance now, and more than 7 million Americans have been lifted out of poverty. Incomes are rising across the board. Our air and water are cleaner. Our food and drinking water are safer. And more of our precious land has been preserved, in the continental United States, than at any time in 100 years.
America has been a force for peace and prosperity in every corner of the globe.
I'm very grateful to be able to turn over『控制；统治』the reins of leadership to a new president, with America in such a strong position to meet the challenges of the future.
Tonight, I want to leave you with three thoughts about our future. First, America must maintain our record of fiscal responsibility『财政责任』. Through our last four budgets, we've turned record deficits『赤字』to record surpluses『盈余』, and we've been able to pay down $600 billion of our national debt, on track to be debt free by the end of the decade for the first time since 1835.
Staying on that course will bring lower interest rates, greater prosperity and the opportunity to meet our big challenges. If we choose wisely, we can pay down the debt, deal with the retirement of the baby boomers『婴儿潮时代』, invest more in our future and provide tax relief.
Second, because the world is more connected every day in every way, America's security and prosperity require us to continue to lead in the world. At this remarkable moment in history, more people live in freedom that ever before. Our alliances are stronger than ever. People all around the world look to America to be a force for peace and prosperity, freedom and security. The global economy is giving more of our own people, and billions around the world, the chance to work and live and raise their families with dignity.
But the forces of integration『集成；融合』that have created these good opportunities also make us more subject to『容易遭受』 global forces of destruction, to terrorism, organized crime and narco-trafficking, the spread of deadly weapons and disease, the degradation『下降』of the global environment.
The expansion of trade hasn't fully closed the gap between those of us who live on the cutting edge『优势地位』 of the global economy and the billions around the world who live on the knife's edge of survival. This global gap requires more than compassion. It requires action. Global poverty is a powder keg『火药桶』that could be ignited『点燃』by our indifference.
In his first inaugural address, Thomas Jefferson warned of entangling『纠缠不清的』 alliances. But in our times, America cannot and must not disentangle itself from the world. If we want the world to embody our shared values, then we must assume a shared responsibility.
If the wars of the 20th century, especially the recent ones in Kosovo and Bosnia, have taught us anything, it is that we achieve our aims by defending our values and leading the forces of freedom and peace. We must embrace boldly and resolutely that duty to lead, to stand with our allies in word and deed, and to put a human face on the global economy so that expanded trade benefits all people in all nations, lifting lives and hopes all across the world.
Third, we must remember that America cannot lead in the world unless here at home we weave the threads of our coat of many colors into the fabric of one America. As we become ever more diverse, we must work harder to unite around our common values and our common humanity.
We must work harder to overcome our differences. In our hearts and in our laws, we must treat all our people with fairness and dignity, regardless of their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation and regardless of when they arrived in our country, always moving toward the more perfect union of our founders dreams.
Hillary, Chelsea and I join all Americans in wishing our very best to the next president, George W. Bush, to his family and his administration in meeting these challenges and in leading freedom's march in this new century.
As for me, I'll leave the presidency more idealistic, more full of hope than the day I arrived and more confident than ever that America's best days lie ahead.
My days in this office are nearly through, but my days of service, I hope, are not. In the years ahead, I will never hold a position higher or acovenant more sacred『神圣的』 than that of president of the United States. But there is no title I will wear more proudly than that of citizen.

The relationship between the U.S. and China is vital to both countries, to the Asia-Pacific region, and to our world as we enter a new century and a new millennium. A modern, prosperous, stable China is in the interest of the United States, as is China's participation in the World Trade Organization, international human rights covenants, non-proliferation agreements, and fora for the peaceful resolution of security issues in the Asia-Pacific region. With different histories, priorities, and cultures, there will inevitably『不可避免地』 be differences between us, but I am confident the U.S. and China can advance our relations in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.
The U.S. Mission in China plays a vital role in this effort and looks forward to working with our many friends in both the U.S. and China to advance relations in a constructive『建设性的』 manner.

Captivating『使…着迷』a business audience doesn't come naturally to most business speakers. But they can learn to do it and have fun—with minimum stress and plenty of charisma『魔力』. Today I want to share you with my seven success tactics of business speech, which I get from my personal business speech-making experience.

First, don't give a sales pitch, but do speak on your topic. Speak about interesting stuff to the audience even make them laugh, but give a great speech. If you sell burglar alarms, speak about home safety; if you sell copiers, speak about image and productivity. Get it?

Third, give a handout. Even if just a few pages, a handout will help the audience follow along and it precludes you from having to memorize the talk. If you give out the handout before you start your talk, people will read one thing while you're speaking about another, and (worse) you lose audience control and the impact of your message.

The last one is hang around after the meeting. That's when you find out what your impact was and who your best prospects are.

Well, thanks, and let me welcome everybody to this fifth CEO summit that we've done. It's our pleasure to have a chance to host you today. We already have a thought that is useful to us. If you're going to put 150 people in a room with a device, you'd better not test with 75 devices the night before. You might not put enough bandwidth into the room. And at least as I was providing help desk support to this part of the audience, I was learning that lesson very vividly.

It has certainly been a wild year since the last time we did this event. Last night at the cocktail party『鸡尾酒会』I was talking to a number of folks about observations on the economy and how wildly that has changed. Certainly in the information technology business there has been ongoing fervor, positive and negative, about e-commerce and e-business, about IT and capital spending『资本投资支出』. IT is over 50 percent of the capital spending now with businesses in the United States. And as capital spending has certainly suffered over the last year, a lot of discussion about what's going on on that front. And certainly also a lot of continuing discussion about how to make employee populations more effective and essentially more empowered to make right decisions by putting information in front of people, right time, right place, etcetera.

IBM has enjoyed a relationship with China that has endured for more than half a century. But I do not believe there has ever been a more exciting time to be doing business here, as vast new opportunity is created by your sweeping modernization and ambitious government-led reform programs for thousands of state-owned『国有的』 enterprises.
This transformation, I believe, will underscore『在…下划线；强调』 the critical importance of information technology as a driver of competitive success and real economic growth for China.
So today, I want to talk to you about what I believe has to be the agenda『议程』 of a leader of an enterprise-business, government agency, university, hospital, bank anywhere in the world-the agenda regarding this technology.
Some of you know that before I came to IBM, my background was a lot like yours. I was a customer of IBM. I was a customer of the computer industry. I arrived at IBM with a firmly held conviction『信念』that this technology is one of those transformational technologies that comes along every hundred years or so and changes everything in our society.
Today, in almost every industry in almost every part of the world there are many examples of enterprises applying this technology challenges for their competitors, I think we're seeing information technology reach the point that all transformational technologies reach when they are no longer controlled by just a small group of skilled professionals, and they cross over to『转到』mass acceptance and ubiquity.
Networking technology is still in its infancy『初期』, yet it has reached already the point where we can call it a new mass medium.
Less than 5 years after the birth of the World Wide Web, some 90 million people are online around the world, and that number will be hundreds of millions before too long.
Here in China, the number of Internet users has nearly doubled since just last October, to more than 1 million users. And I've seen statistics that say your Internet population will exceed 7 million people by the year 2001.

Great speeches will absolutely not fade out from people's hearts; they still shake your soul whenever you pick them up. The following two speeches selected give strong support to my words. These two speeches really change the course of history; they are delivered in high spirit and full of encouraging words, throwing us in a sense of asking what you can do for China and loving freedom and peace.

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are; but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation," a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.
Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility; I welcome it. Martin Luther King (1929-1968) was the most famous leader of the Campaign of Civil Rights for Blacks in the United States. During his lifetime, he was arrested three times. In 1964 he won the Nobel Prize for Peace. In 1968 he was assassinated by a racist. He is considered one of the eight most persuasive speakers in this century. In 1963 he led 250,000 demonstrators to Washington, demanding freedom, equality and employment for the blacks. It was during the demonstration that he delivered this famous speech.
