Language trouble
I.
A: How are you doing, Mr. Wang? Are you enjoying your stay in the US?

B: Yes, I am. I'm still struggling with my English though.

A: It seems like you're managing just fine.

B: I can usually understand when people speak to me. But, I get a bit lost when you all talk to each other. It's just too fast. I can't keep up.

A: That's understandable, but I'm sure you'll get better with practice.

B: To tell you the truth, I'm a little embarrassed to practice. I still have trouble finding the right words to express myself. I'm sure I tire out everyone with my poor English.
A: Not at all. You speak very well. You just lack confidence.

B: Probably that's true. But I'm just not sure how to improve my speaking ability.

A: Just jump into the conversation. Say whatever is on your mind. I promise people will be glad to hear what you've got to say. It makes people more uncomfortable when you stay silent.

B: I know it's true. It's just so hard to get going.

A: I'm sure I'll be having a much harder time with Chinese. You're doing a great job. At least let us know when we're speaking too fast. None of us, I'm sure would mind slowing down.

B: I just don't want to be a bother.

A: You're definitely not a bother. We want you to feel comfortable here.

B: Well, I'll give it a try. I know I need to improve my oral English and I've got to start speaking more.

A: That's the spirit!

II.

A: I don't know what to do. I can never understand anything in his lecture. His accent is very thick and he uses so many difficult words.

B: Don't panic. You can't expect to learn a language overnight. It's going to take you some time.

A: It will certainly take me a while for me to get used to his accent.

B: It's sometimes difficult for me to understand everything he says too. But don't worry too much. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

A: I wish there were some way I could improve faster.

B: There aren't any shortcuts. You don't have to understand every word perfectly. Just try to get the main idea.
A: Yeah, I know. But I can't understand the main idea if I can't understand some of those technical words he uses.

B: That must be difficult. It's a pain to have to memorize so much technical jargon.

A: It's a major headache. It seems I'll never master this language.

B: Don't be so hard on yourself. You've come a long way. Pretty soon you'll be speaking like a native. And don't be shy to just raise your hand and ask him to repeat something he said.

A: You mean stop the class?

B: Yeah, sure. It's your class too. Don't sit back and let other people leave you behind.

A: I'm not sure I'm brave enough to do that. And anyway, it's not fair to the others to have to put up with my poor English.

B: Forget about them. What's important is that you get as much out of the class as you can.

Customs
在海关
I.

A: Do you have anything to declare madam?

B: No, I don't.
没有。

A: Would you mind if I looked at this suitcase?

B: Go ahead.

A: What are these?

B: They're gifts I'm bringing to my friends.

A: Are you a visitor or a resident?

B: I'm a visitor. I'll only be staying a few weeks.

A: What's in this bag?

B: It's just some local fruits from my hometown.

A: I'm sorry, agricultural products cannot be brought into the United States. I'm going to have to confiscate them.

B: Oh, I didn't know. I'm sorry.

A: Do you have any other kinds of seeds or plants?

B: No, sir.

A: That's all. You're free to go. Enjoy your stay here.

II.
A: Can I see your passport and customs declaration?

B: Here's my passport, but I don't have the customs declaration form.

A: They didn't give you one on the plane? Well, you'll have to fill it out here.

B: Certainly.
好的。

A: How long are you planning to stay?

B: Only a couple of weeks.

A: What is the purpose of your trip?

B: I'm here on business. I'll only be staying a couple of weeks.

A: You have nothing to declare?

B: No, I don't.

A: You'll have to open this bag.

B: No problem. These are just some souvenirs I'm taking with me.

A: I see. How many cigarettes do you have?

B: Only a couple of cartons. Is that OK?

A: It's not a problem. You don't have to declare so few.

Travel by air:
I.

A: I'm planning a trip to China. I'd like to fly to Hong Kong sometime at the end of August. Can you tell me some prices of flights?

B: Your plans aren't more specific than that?

A: Well, I can be fairly flexible. I need to be in Guangzhou by the 26th of August. But, I'd like to find the cheapest flight possible.

B: That's difficult in August. It's at the height of the tourist season.

A: Just see what you can do.

B: Which airport are you leaving from in America?

A: I'm closest to Dulles International Airport, but I wouldn't mind driving a little further to get a better deal.

B: When will you be returning to the United States?

A: If possible, I would like to have my return date open. I'm not exactly sure when I'm coming back.

B: And I assume you do not wish to travel first class?

A: That's right. I'm more concerned about price than comfort.

B: There's a flight to Hong Kong that leaves August 20 at 11:00 am from Dulles with a stopover in Los Angeles and Taipei for $980 plus tax.

A: That's a pretty good deal. How long is the flight?

B: The flight last 14 hours from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. Of course, it's another 5 hours from Washington to Los Angeles.

A: That's a long time in the air. How long are my stopovers.

B: You have a long one in Los Angeles, almost 8 hours. You mighteven be able to see a little of the city if you like. Your stop in Taipei is only a couple of hours. It's just so you can change crews.

A: Well, I doubt if I can do better. I'll take it.

II.

A: Is this where I check my bags?

B: Yes, sir, but you'll have to get in line behind these people, sir, theywere here before you.

A: Are you ready now? I'm in a bit of a hurry. There was such bad traffic, I'm afraid I'm running a little late for my plane.

B: I'll get you to your plane just as quick as I can, sir. Can I see your ticket and some photo ID?

A: Here you are.
给你。

B: Do you want these bags checked all the way to Hong Kong, sir?

A: No, just check them to Los Angeles. I want to make sure my luggage and I stay together. It's such a nightmare when your luggage gets lost. And I'm going to need it when I get to Hong Kong. So, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

B: No problem, sir. You are allowed to check two bags and take on carry-on item with you on the plane.

A: Here are my two bags. Do you have tags for them?

B: Here you are. Now I have to ask you a few questions. Did you pack your own bags?

A: Yes, I did.
是的。

B: Has anyone approached you and given you anything or asked you to take something on the plane?

A: No. I have nothing but the things I packed myself.

B: We just have to ask to make sure. We don't want to take any risks.

A: I'm glad you're careful. Is that all?

B: Yes. Your gate is B-16. You'll have to hurry.

A: Thanks, and here's something for your trouble.

B: Thank you, sir.

Travel by bus
I.
A: Excuse me, is this the right bus to take to the Smithsonian?

B: It depends what part of the Smithsonian you want to go to.

A: I want to go to the Museum of American History.

B: Well then, this is the right bus.

A: How do I know where to get off?

B: You can't miss it. It's a large building. We'll pass the Washington Monument and it will be the next stop after that.

A: Can you let me know when it's the right stop.

B: Yeah, I can call out the stop. But move along now, you're holding up the people behind you.

A: How much is the fare.

B: $1 please. Just put it in the box.

II.
A: Do you know how I can get to the zoo?

B: The zoo? It's a little complicated. You have to take the 134 and transfer to the 68.

A: Where can I pick up the 134?

B: The stop is down that way. Cross the street and walk for a couple of blocks.

A: Do I have to pay for both buses?

B: No, ask for a transfer on the first bus.

A: Where do I get off the 134?

B: This is a little difficult. You need to get off at the stop before the botanical gardens. If you pass the gardens, you've gone too far. Get the driver to let you know where to get off.

A: And then where do I get the 68?

B: Almost directly across the street from where you get off the first bus. Ask anyone and they'll show you the way.

A: Thanks for your help.

B: Don't mention it.

III.

A: Can I get a bus ticket here to Chicago?

B: Yes madam. When would you like to leave?

A: How often do the buses run?

B: We have one that leaves in the morning at 6:00 am, one at noon, one at 4:00 pm, and the last one leaves at 8:00 pm.

A: When does the 12:00 reach Chicago?

B: It usually takes about 5 or 6 hours, but there's often heavy traffic. If you're flexible, you would take one of the other ones.

A: I guess I'll go at 6:00. I want to have time to enjoy the city. Is it easy to get to the city center from the bus station?

B: It's a fairly long walk, but there are plenty of taxis and local buses willing to take you. Just step outside the bus station and you'll find it's easy enough to get around.

A: Alright, how much will that be?

B: $28 please. And here's your ticket. Have a good trip.

Travel by taxi
I.
A: Taxi!
的士!

B: Where to madam?

A: Kennedy airport, and quickly too. I have a plane to catch.

B: No problem, madam. I'll get you there as soon as I can.

A: Will all my luggage fit in the trunk?

B: Sure. Here, let me take it for you.

A: I'm running a bit late. Do you think traffic will be bad?

B: Rush hour should be over. But you never know what you'll run into.

A: Well, step on it. I can't miss this plane.

B: I'll do my best madam. But I can't work miracles.

A: Oh no, why should there be so much traffic? There must be an accident.

B: We'll be around it in no time. We're starting to move again. They must have cleared it up. I guess it's your lucky day.

A: Here's the airport. I'm flying on United Airlines.

B: There's the terminal. Let me help you with your bags. You can check your bags over there. It'll be $30 even.

A: Here you go. Thanks for getting me here so quickly. It looks like I've even got some time to spare.

II.

A: Can you take me to the Historic Colonial Inn?

B: I'm not sure where that is. Do you have a street address?

A: It's on Hillborough street. I don't have the exact number.

B: It's not ringing a bell. Can you direct me?

A: Maybe. It's in the old part of town. Close to the river.

B: Ok, I think I know how to go.

A: Take a left here and go straight for a while.

B: I don't often have to go to the old part of town. I don't know my way around as much.

A: Oh, we missed the right turn back there. Can we turn around?

B: This is a one way street. We're going to have to go around the block.

A: With all these circles and one way streets, this city is pretty hard to get around in.

B: You're telling me. Ok, is this the right turn?

A: Yes, go here. We're going to cross a bridge, take a left turn at the light, and it will be on the right side of the road.

B: Is that it up ahead.

A: Yeah. You can stop right here. Thanks.

Travel by train

A: At what time does the train leave for Boston?

B: Trains leave the station for Boston every two hours or so, sir. The next train leaves at 9:00.

A: Is it an express train?

B: No, sir. The next express train leaves at 11:00.

A: What time does the normal train reach its destination?

B: It should get there at 3:45.

A: Does it stop much along the way?

B: The train makes frequent stops. I suggest that if you don't want to have to stop so much you take the express train, though it is a bit more expensive.

A: Yeah, I guess I'll wait for the express. That way, I have some time to get some breakfast.

B: So you want one ticket to Boston on Boston express. Is that a one way or a return ticket?

A: Return. I want to come back on Sunday.

B: Very well, sir. Here's your ticket. That'll be $120.

A: Here's a traveler's check. What platform does it leave from?

B: I'm not sure yet. It'll be displayed on the big screen behind you.

A: Alright, I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks.

II.

A: Where's the platform for the train leaving for Atlanta?

B: Right over there. I'm traveling on that train myself. I'll go with you.

A: This is my first trip on a train in the US. I'm a little unfamiliar with how things work.

B: Don't worry, it's not very complicated. Here, give your ticket and luggage voucher to the attendant.

A: Do I put my bags up here?

B: Yes, up here above the seat. Let me help you. Goodness! What have you got in this bag? It's so heavy

A: Mostly books. I don't like to travel without good reading material.

B: Yeah, but it must slow you down to be lugging all that weight around.

A: I don't mind. I'm getting used to it. Where is the best place to sit?

B: There are two seats in the corner over there. Is this your first trip to Atlanta?

A: Yes, but I'm actually on my way to New Orleans. I'll change trains in Atlanta.

B: New Orleans is a fun city. I'm sure you'll have a great time there.

A: I hope so. Do you mind if I smoke?

B: I wouldn't mind. But this is a no-smoking train. They won't let you smoke.

A: Well, I hope it's not too long a trip.

B: It'll be over in no time.

Performances and shows
I.
A: Is this your first opera?

B: Yes, it is. I'm not sure what I'll think of it.

A: Opera is something people either love or hate. I've always loved it, but I know lots of people that can't stand the stuff.

B: I'll try anything once. I hope I love it, but I just wish it wasn't so long.

A: Yeah, operas can frequently be over 3 hours. But I think you'll enjoy this one. It's by Mozart. It's not only beautiful, it's also entertaining.

B: Too bad our seats are so far away.

A: Yeah really. They call this the nose bleed section.

B: There are some empty seats closer up. Can we move?

A: We'll have to wait until intermission, and then we can see about moving. But people are always coming late to operas. We wouldn't want to be in someone else's seat when they arrived and the music had already started.

B: I guess not. Will I be able to read the subtitles from up here?

A: I'm sure they try to make it possible for everyone in the audience to be able to read them. But just try to concentrate on the music. You'll enjoy it more if you're not always worrying about reading what's going on in the plot.

B: But then I won't know what's happening.

A: Let the music tell the story. Look here. There's a summary of the plot in our program. Read it now and then you'll have a general idea of what's going on.

B: That should make it much easier. Oh, they're blinking the lights. That must mean the performance is about to begin.

II.

A: Did you enjoy the play?

B: Well, to be perfectly honest it wasn't exactly my kind of thing.

A: Yeah, it was a little different. I've never seen anything quite like it.

B: But you liked it all the same?

A: Yes, I did. I can't say I really understood what was going on, but I found it really entertaining.

B: I couldn't really get the jokes.

A: Everything was so unexpected. No one ever did what they were supposed to. And the leading man's sense of humor was so dry. I thought it was hilarious.

B: I could never understand why you were laughing. I guess our senses of humor are different.

A: That's very likely. Even when people are from the same culture, their sense of humor differs.

B: I was also not very impressed by the set or the costumes or the lack there of I should say.

A: I'm sure the director used so little color on purpose.

B: On purpose? But why? It made the play so boring.

A: I read that she didn't want people to be distracted by flashy costumes or sets. She wanted the audience to concentrate on the acting.

B: That's ridiculous. They probably didn't have enough money to get decent costumes. It takes all the fun out of the performance if there's nothing nice to look at. Besides, for me it's the other way around. I needed something to distract me from the acting.

A: Well I guess we all have different tastes.

I.

A: How about going to see a basketball game with me tonight?

B: Alright. That sounds like it might be fun.

A: Might be fun? This is THE game to see of the season. Tonight we're playing against our biggest rival. You might have noticed that basketball is something like religion around here. People take it very eriously. Anyone not actually at the game will certainly be watching it on television.

B: Yeah, I noticed that you all seem to get carried away a bit by sports. Don't you think you take things too far. I mean, after all, it's just a game.

A: Of course. It's all in good fun. People are just having a good time when they're rooting for their home team. It also makes the community feel closer.

B: I'm sure it does make you feel proud to have such a good team. Will your school lose many of its good players to the NBA this year?

A: Yeah, two of our best players are graduating. Another one is thinking of going up to the pros early. It's really going to change the team next year. We'll have to start over with new players.

B: But I bet this year your team has a really good chance of doing well.

A: We're a good bet for the national championship. I wouldn't be surprised if our team went all the way.

B: Don't you think all this excitement about sports takes emphasis away from academics?

A: Perhaps you're right. But you have to have both things in life. And it's impossible not to get excited when your team is doing so well.

B: What are our seats like tonight?

A: They're pretty good seats. They're at about center court, fairly close in. Let me tell you, these tickets were hard to come by. You're lucky.

B: Well, thanks for inviting me. I'm sure I'll have a good time.

A: My pleasure. I'll pick you up around 6:00.

II.

A: Do you enjoy playing sports?

B: I used to. When I was in college I played sports all the time. But now, who has the time?

A: After work you don't have time?

B: I usually get home about 6:00 or 7:00 and I have about enough energy to turn on the television and fix myself some dinner. I used to be pretty good at tennis. I wouldn't mind finding someone to play with on weekends, but those fill up pretty quickly too. I cann't seem to find any time to exercise.

A: I would love to find a group to play volleyball with. I really miss playing on a team.

B: People just don't have time these days to work and commit to a team. It's a shame. I've been planning to join a gym for months now. I just haven't gotten around to it.

A: I don't really like gyms. Something about the atmosphere in them bugs me. I think it's being inside with all those machines. It just isn't a natural way to get exercise.

B: Welcome to the modern world.

A: It seems like people don't really care about learning a new skill or working together with a group, they just want to get in shape.

B: I think you're right. But we all need to stay in shape and I figure if I have to pay money to the gym then I'll be more likely to go there and actually get some exercise.

A: That's true. You do what you gotta do.

B: I wouldn't give up on the volleyball. Have you looked into the department of parks and recreation? I know they organize sports teams for kids, but I think they might have teams for adults too.

A: I hadn't thought of that. That would be great. Do you have their number?

B: No, but I'm sure it's listed in the phone book. Or you could just call information.

A: Thanks, I'll look into it.

Making an appointment
约 会
I.
A: Hello!
你好!

B: What can I help you with?

A: I'm John Lee, I have an appointment scheduled with Ms. Carter.

B: I'm sorry. I've been trying to get in touch with you Mr. Lee. I'm afraid Ms. Carter has had to leave the office on urgent business. She asked me to try and reschedule your appointment.

A: That's too bad. I wish I've known about it sooner. I raced over here so I could be on time.

B: We'll make it as soon as possible. I'm so sorry for this inconvenience.

A: It can't be helped. These things happen. Does she have any time later this week?

B: Let me take a look at her appointment book here. This week...no, I'm afraid she's booked up for this week. This is a busy time of year for us. What about first thing Monday morning? She's got some time around 9:00?

A: No, I can't make it then. I always have a meeting on Monday mornings.

B: Well then, when can we make it? She has time on Wednesday afternoons.

A: Wednesday would be fine. Can we schedule it around 2:00?

B: Yes, that looks like it would be fine. I'll write your name down for Wednesday at 2:00. And here's one of her cards. I'll write the appointment on the back for you.

A: Do I need to call and confirm?

B: No need. Barring something unforeseen, she will meet you then. Again, I apologize for the time you've wasted today.

A: Don't worry about it. It's no problem.

II.

A: What are your plans this Friday? Are you very busy?

B: No, actually I'm free.

A: I can't believe it. A Friday that you have no plans. Will wonders never cease?

B: Were you just asking for your own information or did you have an idea for something we could do?

A: Well, I was wondering if you'd like to go to the concert in the park on Friday evening. The Atlanta symphony is playing pieces by Russian composers.

A: That sounds like a wonderful idea. When does the concert begin?

B: At around 7:00 I think, but I'll call and make sure. We should get there early though to make sure we can find a space on the lawn.

A: We don't sit in chairs?

B: No, we'll need to bring a blanket to sit on. It'll be fun. We can take a picnic dinner with us.

A: Great! What should I bring?

B: Bring some fruit, cheese, and crackers. I'll barbeque some chicken. What should we bring to drink?

A: I'll just pick up a bottle of wine. Where and when shall we meet?

B: I'll pick you up around 5:00. We should drive together since it's so difficult finding a parking place in that part of town.

A: Good idea. I might be a little late, but I'll try and leave work early.

B: I'll just hang around your house until you show up. Well, I have to run now. See you Friday.

A: See you then.
再见。

I.

A: Hi, I'd like to have my hair cut and styled. Do you have time now, or should I make an appointment?

B: No, I shouldn't be too much longer. Just have a seat and I'll be right with you.

A: Alright, thanks.

B: Ok, now I'm ready for you. What would you like to have done?

A: I'd like a couple of inches taken off. I want my hair to come just to my chin. It should be shorter in the back.

B: To about here. No problem, I can do that. Would you like a shampoo?

A: Yes, please.

B: Do you use conditioner on your hair?

A: Not usually. I don't like to use too many chemicals on my hair.

B: Your hair is a little dry. Conditioner will soften it up for you.Would you like me to use some?

A: Well then go ahead. I'll try it out.

B: Now how's that? I cut a couple inches off, but I can make it shorter if you like. Do you want to see it from the back?

A: It seems like the right side is a little shorter than the left side. Can you even them out more?

B: Certainly. Is that more to your liking?

A: Yes, much better.

B: It really suits your face. Would you like your hair blow dried?

A: No thank you. Blow drying damages my hair.

B: As you please. You're all set. You can pay at the front desk.

A: Thanks, and here's something for your trouble.

B: Thank you. Have a good weekend.

II.

A: How would you like your hair cut, sir?

B: I need it cut short on the sides, but don't take too much off the top.

A: Alright, would you like a shampoo?

B: No, I'm in a bit of a hurry.

A: No problem, sir, it won't take very long.

B: I usually don't go so long without a cut. My hair's getting pretty shaggy. I'm not used to wearing such long hair.

A: Will this do? Or do you want a little more taken off?

B: You can take a little more off the top.

A: Would you straighten your head a bit, sir? That's good. Ok, how's that?

B: Very good, thank you. I look much more presentable now.

A: Would you like me to use any oil?

B: No thank you. Nothing of that kind, please.

III.

A: I'd like to make an appointment to have my hair permed.

B: Certainly. Is there any particular hair stylist you would like to have?

A: No, I've never been here before.

B: Alright, there's an appointment with Janice two weeks from today.

A: There's nothing any sooner?

B: No, I'm afraid we're very busy.

A: Well, then, that'll have to do.

A: I want a hamburger. But I don't want it cooked as rare as it was last time. I like my meat well done.

B: Could you recommend something for us?

B: Thanks, we'll think about it.

A: I haven't been here before either. But I hear they have a very good buffet.

B: What's a buffet?

A: A buffet is where you pay a set price and eat as much as you like. You serve yourself. You just take a plate, get in line and choose whatever you like. When you're hungry you can go back and get more.

B: It sounds good. Is it expensive?

A: It's $12 for all-you-can-eat.

B: Do you have these in a size 7?

A: Just a minute, let me check...No, I'm sorry. All we have is a 6 1/2 and a 7 1/2.

B: Let me try the 6 1/2.

A: How do they fit.

B: They're too tight.

A: Would you like to try the larger pair?

B: No, they'll certainly be too big.

A: What about this pair? They're very similar and I think we have them in a size 7.

B: Alright, I'll try them. They fit, but they're not very comfortable. I need something durable but professional looking for work.

A: What about these? They're very stylish, but I think they'll also be comfortable.

B: Yes, these feel much better. I'll take them.

A: Good. Will that be all for you?

B: Yes, thank you.

A: Excuse me, I'd like to look at some watches.

A: That one up there with the gold band.

B: Yes, very nice. Would you like to try it on?

A: Yes, please. Hmm...let me look at some others.

B: What about this one?

A: It's nice, but I think the face is too big. I have a small wrist, so I don't want anything too large.

B: Then this is the one for you.

A: It's perfect. I'll take it.

III.

A: I'm looking for a gift for my wife. I think she'd like some perfume. Can you help me? I'm not very familiar with this sort of thing.

B: Certainly, sir. This one is very popular now.
A: It smells a little too flowery. Do you have anything more subtle?
B: What do you think of this one? It's not quite as strong.
A: Yes, this one is good.
B: Alright, let me just ring you up over here.

I.

A: How can I send this package so I make sure it gets there?
B: You can send it by certified mail. You'll receive a card in the mail to let you know it got to its destination safely.
A: Is it much more expensive than regular mail?
B: There is a difference of several dollars, but it's the only way for you to guarantee that it will get there.
A: Well then I guess I'd better do it.
B: You need to fill in this form here.
A: I also need to send with this package a self-addressed express mail envelope.
B: In that case you need to get one of those envelopes over there and fill it out with your address. Then, when you've filled everything out, get back in line and I'll send it for you.

B: You could send it express mail, and it would get there within 10 days.

A: How much would that cost?

B: Let me weigh the package and I'll tell you. It will be $40 to send it by express mail.

A: That's a bit much. I'd better send it by a slower post.

B: If you send it third class it will take 6 to 8 weeks.

A: That's a long time, but I guess I'll have to do it.

B: Is there anything of value in the package?

A: I'm just sending some books, but I guess I'd like to have it insured since I'm going to so much trouble to send it.

B: How much would you like to have it insured for?

A: I'd like to insure it for $200.

B: Alright. You'll need to fill in this form and list the contents of the package.

A: Do I have to list everything in the package?

B: If it's just books, you can send it as "Printed Materials."

A: OK, is that all I need to do?

B: Make sure the package is well-sealed. Good, you've all set.

A: Do you have anything more interesting than these?

B: We have an American wildflowers series of stamps. Would that be better?

A: Yes, thank you. That's all I need. How much will that come to?

B: Yeah, me too. But I think I'm starting to recover.

A: We'll just hope for the best.

B: Yes, I need a positive attitude if I want to recover quickly.

A: Well, I'm glad everything went well. Do you know how much longer you'll have to be in here.

B: At least a few days more. I can't wait to get out of here. I don't know how much longer I can stand lying in this hospital bed watching television.

A: Make sure you take it easy. Don't rush anything. Well, it looks like visiting hours are over. I'll come see you again soon.

B: What can I do about it?

A: I'll give you a prescription for some antibiotics. You must finish the entire prescription, if you don't you won't kill off all the infection.

B: Alright. Is there anything else I should do?

A: For your cold you just need rest. Gargle some salt water for your sore throat and take some tylenol for your fever. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and take it easy for a while.

B: Alright, I've done.

A: Do you have an insurance card?

B: OK. Now what do I have to do to get my card?

A: Go to the desk on the second floor with these forms and they will give you your card. Then, come back here and I'll let the doctor know that you're here.

B: Good evening. Do you have a double room available this evening?

A: I'm sorry sir, we've got no double rooms left for tonight. Do you mind having separate rooms?

B: That's fine. Will you have any doubles free tomorrow night. We're staying in town for three days.

A: Yes, tomorrow night we can move you to a double room.

B: That would be great. How much are the rooms per night?

A: $150 per night and that includes a continental breakfast.

B: Are the rooms quiet? I'm not used to all this city traffic.

A: Yes, sir. Your rooms tonight are on the 30th floor, so they'll be high above the noise of the city. Could you please register here?

B: Certainly. Could you recommend somewhere good to eat to night, but not too expensive?

A: Yes. There's a cafe within walking distance from the hotel that serves reasonably priced food, and there's good live music there on Friday nights. You just take a left out of the hotel and walk for three blocks and it's on your right. It's called 49 West.

B: Thanks. Do I need to fill in anything else?

A: No, that's fine. Is this your first time in the city?

B: Yes, it is. I'm here on business, but I hope to have time to see some of the sights as well.

A: If you have time, the hotel offers city tours twice daily. Just contact the front desk if you're interested.

B: Sure. I hope I'll be able to go.

B: Yes sir, we take Master card and Visa.

A: How about traveler's checks?

B: Yes, we do. Let's see...your bill comes to $300.

A: Here's a check for $400. Can I have the change in US dollars?

B: Certainly, sir. Just let me get that for you. Here you are.

A: Thanks. Could you also mail this letter for me.

B: No problem, sir. Is there anything else I can do for you?

A: No, that's all.

B: Have a nice trip back and come and visit us again sometime.

A: I hope I will. See you.

House Hunting:
租 房
I.

A: Hello, I'm calling to inquire about the apartment for rent. I read your ad in the paper.

B: Oh yes. It's a two bedroom apartment.

A: I'm looking for something to share with two other people. Is one of the bedrooms large enough for two people to share?

B: Yes, one of the bedrooms is much larger than the other. Three people could live there quite comfortably.

A: What about the rent? How much are you charging per month?

B: It's $350 per month and I'll charge a month's rent as a deposit. It's within walking distance of the city center and the college and it's recently been redone. We've painted inside and out and we've replaced several of the kitchen appliances.

A: $350 per month. That's more than I wanted to pay. Does that include water and electricity?

B: No, it doesn't. There's also a fee for trash collection. But you won't find a cheaper place around here.
A: Yeah, it's not easy to find a place close to campus. Do you a
llow pets?

B: It depends. You may have a cat or a small dog for a fee of $50, but I won't allow anything larger.

A: Well, I guess my friends and I should have a look at it. When is a convenient time for you to show us around?

B: Are you free tomorrow at 4:00?

A: I'm not sure if we can make it then. What about the day after?

B: I wouldn't wait so long. I expect to rent the apartment very quickly. You're competing with a lot of people.

A: Alright, we'll be there tomorrow at 4:00. Shall we meet you at the apartment?

B: Sure. I'll meet you at 4:00 then.

A: Thanks. I'll see you tomorrow.

II.

A: Hi! You must be Mary. I'm here to have a look at the apartment.

B: Hello. And you must be James. Hold on and I'll show you around.

A: It looks like a very nice neighborhood.

B: Yes, it's very quiet here. A nice community. We don't usually like to rent this apartment to college students, but we make excep tions sometimes.

A: The kitchen isn't very large.

B: No. But it gets nice morning sunshine. And we've just put in a new oven. The last people who lived here were a little messy as you can see, but we'll do a lot of cleaning before the next people move in.

A: I like the high ceilings. Is this room a bedroom?

B: Yes. You can either use it as a bedroom or as a study. The master bedroom is this way.

A: There's only one bathroom?

B: Yes. That's probable the apartment's biggest disadvantage. You have to walk through the master bedroom to get to the bathroom.

A: When would the apartment be available for us to move in?

B: By the first of the month. Have you filled in an application?

A: Yes, I filled it in over at your office. I'll have to talk it over with my friend, but I think we're interested.

B: Well, I'll need to know if you want to take it as soon as possible.

A: I'll give you a call tonight or tomorrow and let you know.

Asking the Way:
问 路
I.
A: Excuse me, I'm trying to locate this address.

B: I'm sorry, I'm new here myself. I don't know my way around town. Hold on, my friend knows town better than I do. He might be able to help.

A: Thanks. I'm completely turned around.

B: It's easy to get lost in a new city.

C: Yeah, I know this address. We're very close. Go to the far end of this street, take a right, and walk until you see the large glass office building. This street should be on your left.

A: Thanks for your help.

C: Don't mention it.

II.

A: Do you know which bus I should take to get to the National Art Gallery?

B: Let me see. You can take the 49 and transfer to the 81 at Central Plaza or the 113 will take you almost all the way there. But you'll have to walk a way.

A: Is the museum hard to find?

B: Not at all. It's just hard to see from where you get off the bus. You should get off the bus after you pass a large shopping center with a red roof. Then walk up about two blocks and take a right. Then you should see the museum.

A: Great. Thanks for your help.

B: No problem. I hope you enjoy the museum.
III.

A: I'm completely lost. Can you help me?

B: Well, I can try. Where do you want to go?

A: I'm trying to find the Chamber of Commerce.

B: Now, I should know where that is. What is the name of that street? Oh, I know. It's on Gardener Street.

A: Do I have to walk much further to get there?

B: Well, I'm afraid you're going the wrong way.

A: Oh no! Is it within walking distance?

B: It could take you a half hour or more to get there. What you do is turn around and take the first left at the traffic light. Walk for about twelve blocks, then turn right onto Franklin Street. The first right will be Gardener. You won't have to walk far before you see the Chamber of Commerce on your left.

A: Is there a bus I could take that could get me there any faster?

B: Yes. You would need to cross the street and wait for the 95 at that bus stop over there. But I don't know how quickly the buses come. And with this bad traffic, you might be better off walking.

A: I'm sure you're right. It's just that I've been walking around all day trying to find this place and I'm completely exhausted.

B: Sure, I understand. Well, I hope you get there alright.

A: Yeah, me too. Thanks for your help.

B: No problem.

B: Sure thing. Just let me get something to write with. Alright, now I'm ready. What's your name?

B: I'll let her know. Does she have your number?

A: This is Susan Tsai. I don't know if you'll remember me. We met the other afternoon over at the college.

B: Oh yes. Now I remember. What can I do for you Susan?

A: I'm very sorry to trouble you, but you mentioned that you might be available sometime to help me practice English. I have to give a speech for class in a few weeks and I could use some coaching.

B: Sure, I'll be happy to. Unfortunately, I was just running out the door when you called, so I can't talk right now.

A: Do you still have my card?

B: Yes, I do.

A: You can just give me a call at your convenience.

B: Sure. I have to be away next week. But as soon as I'm back in town, I'll give you a ring.

A: Thank so much. I know you're a busy man.

B: Don't worry about it. It's my pleasure.

A: Well, I'll let you go now.

B: Alright, talk to you soon. Good-bye.

A: Good-bye.
再见。
