Peter was eight and a half years old, and he went to a school near his house. He always went there and came home on foot, and he usually got back on time, but last Friday he came home from school late. His mother was in the kitchen, and she saw him and said to him, "Why are you late today, Peter?"
"My teacher was angry and sent me to the headmaster after our lessons," Peter answered.
"To the headmaster?" his mother said. "Why did she send you to him?"
"Because she asked a question in the class," Peter said, "and none of the children gave her the answer except me."

The rain was very heavy when I met my nephew. I thought it would never stop. The morning had been fine, and if he had arrived earlier neither of us would have got wet.
"If you had only telephoned me first, " I said, "we would have brought our umbrellas and kept dry." But my nephew did not seem to mind that his trousers were wet.
I asked him what he would like to do. "I want to go to the zoo," he said immediately. " I like wild animals; when they are in cages, of course!"
The rain had stopped when we got to the zoo. The first animal we saw was a lion. My nephew is a nature lover. "To think people shoot such beautiful animals, " he said. "If I had my way I would make a law that would not allow people to hunt. "
"Many wild animals are protected by law. They live in National Parks in their native lands, " I replied, "especially in Africa and America. "
Then we moved on to the monkeys. We saw deer and wild donkeys; everything, in fact, from a mouse to an elephant!

Dear Helen,
I was very pleased to read your letter about the music program at your university. I'd like to go with you, but my uncle and aunt from Washington, D. C., will be here for several days and I must be with them on Saturday. I'd rather be with you.
I'm sorry to read about your trouble with your Spanish class. I think you should see if you can meet a Spanish person. There might be a Spanish student at your school. If so, I believe he'll be glad to study English with you, and you can study Spanish with him. Then you'll know Spanish, he'll know English, and you'll both be good students. What do you think about this?
I study French as my language, but I don't have trouble with it yet. I have to write a lot of papers for my class in world history, and sometimes I have a little trouble, but I really like my classes this year.
I'm very sorry I can't be with you on Saturday, but please go to the program. Perhaps you can go with one of the boys from your university.
Yours,

Dick was a waiter in a small restaurant. One day a man came in and sat down at one of the tables. Dick greeted him and went to find out what he wanted to eat. The man said he would like some chicken with potatoes and other vegetables.
"Roast chicken," he added as Dick was leaving.
"Very well, sir," Dick answered and disappeared into the kitchen.
But the man called him back, saying, "Just a moment, waiter. Please try to have it cooked just right - not too little, and not too much, and with as little fat as possible."
"Very well, sir," answered Dick. "I'll tell the cook."
Once more he began to go towards the kitchen, but again the man stopped him with the words, "Oh, and I forgot to explain that I'm fond of the leg."
"Very well, sir," answered Dick. "Do you prefer the left leg, or the right?"

When Anna walked home along the quiet street, a tall man with a sharp knife in his right hand ran out at her. " Good morning, lady." The man said in a cool voice, " I don't wish you to die here."
"What do you want?" Anna was very afraid.
"Your earrings. Take them off!"
Anna tried to cover her necklace with the collar of her overcoat while she used the other hand to take off both of her earrings which she quickly threw on the ground.
"Take them and let me go," she said.
The robber saw the girl didn't care for the earrings at all, only trying to protect the necklace. He realized the necklace would cost much more. So he said, "Give me your necklace."
"Oh, sir. It's not worth much. Please let me keep it."
"Stop talking rubbish. Quick!"
Anna took off her necklace and gave it to the man. As soon as the robber disappeared, she picked up her earrings and ran as fast as she could to one of her friends.

At last, one of the workmen said to him: "But, Bill, don't you like fish sandwiches?"

For a long time, he used it to do hard work around his farm. He took the back seat out, and used the car for carrying food out to his cows.
People used to laugh at Fred for having such an old car. But lately, they have been asking him if they could buy it. One man offered to pay $ 10, 000 for it, Fred has had the car painted and cleaned up. But he isn't going to sell it---he wouldn't feel happy driving any other car.
The car isn't the only thing Fred Cooper has. He lives in a house which is one hundred and four years old. It was built by his grandfather. Some of the trees around it are a hundred years old as well and were planted by his grandmother.
Fred lives now in much the same way that he did when he was a young man. He works hard, looking after his animals, bees, and plants, as he has always done. He doesn't see any reason to change with the times.

Dear Helen,
I'd like to write to you often, but I'm very busy with my classes here at the university right now. You are a student, too, and I know you understand.
I have to study for all of my classes, but this is my first year of Spanish, and it gives me a lot of trouble. Spanish is my teacher's native language; he's from South America. He wants me to speak fluently, but I'm not very familiar with Spanish, and I often make mistakes in grammar and pronunciation. Some people are good language students and can speak and understand with no trouble, but I'm not. My accent isn't good, and I don't read or write well, either. Perhaps if I study my Spanish lessons every day, I won't have trouble with the language. Right now my professor isn't happy with me and I'm really sorry about that.
Helen, I have something to ask you. There will be a program of Italian and German music at the Student Theater here at my university next Saturday, April 12. It ought to be extremely good. After the program, there will be cake and ice cream to eat and coffee to drink. Would you like to go with me? I'd be very happy if you would. Please answer and tell me if you can go. If you can't I won't go either.
Your good friend,
Bill

"Ted Green."
"Are you an engineer?"
"No, I'm not. I'm a farmer."
"That's fine. Now tell me about your family. You have a large family, don't you?"
"No, Fred. My family is small---just my wife and me. We see your program every week, and I am glad I can be here tonight."
"Thank you, Mr. Green. You weren't born in this city, were you?"
"No, I was born in a country town far from here, but I think this is a fine city."

Mrs. Smith was looking out of her window, when she saw a truck and a big car hit each other. She ran out to help. There was only one man in the truck and one woman in the car, and neither of them was hurt, but the car was damaged.
The lady looked very white and her hands were shaking, so Mrs. Smith invited her into her house and gave her some tea. She was a pleasant woman of about 50 years old. She drank the tea and soon looked much better. Then she said to Mrs. Smith, " Have you got a telephone, please? I would like to telephone my husband. We have a kind of custom-whenever I have an accident with the car, I telephone him."

My taxi-driver calmly opened his door, got out, pointed to the driver's seat which he had just left, and said to the man who was blowing the horn, "Sir. You get into my taxi and drive over her. I always feel so uncomfortable when I drive over old ladies."

A potato farmer was sent to prison just at the time when he should have been digging the ground for planting the new crop of potatoes. He knew that his wife would not be strong enough to do the digging by herself, but that she could manage to do the planting; and he also knew that he did not have any friends or neighbors who would be willing to do the digging for him. So he wrote a letter to his wife which said, "Please do not dig the potato field. I hid the money and the gun there."
Ten days later he got a letter from his wife. It said, "I think somebody is reading your letters before they go out of the prison. Some policemen arrived here two days ago and dug up the whole potato field. What shall I do now?"
The prisoner wrote back at once, "Plant the potatoes, of course."

Questions 17 - 20
Now, you want to know about life in the past. Right? I can tell you. When I was a boy, things were different. I had to get up at six every morning. That was not very bad in summer, but in winter it was cold. And we didn't have any hot water in the house. We had to wash in cold water. We didn't have a bathroom. My dad had some chickens. I had to feed them every morning and then I had to walk to school with my little sister. It was two miles to school and two miles back in the evening. But it always seemed longer in the morning when we were going to school. There was a bus, but we didn't have the money. And we had to go to bed at seven o'clock every night. We couldn't watch TV because there wasn't any. On Sundays, we had to go to church three times---morning, afternoon and evening. And we couldn't play outside on Sundays. But it wasn't all bad. We had some good times. We could go out and our parents didn't have to worry about us. There weren't so many cars on the roads then. So the streets were safe to play in. And there were not many robbers and thieves in those days. We had to work hard and we weren't able to buy all those things in the shops today. Life was hard, but it was simple and people were happier. I don't think I'd like to be young today.
